Equalizer Interview - Caroline Burton, WorkAid, The Aldingbourne Trust

This is the ninth in a series of Equalizer interviews with the people behind Crawley RFC

Caroline Burton is an advisor for WorkAid. Set up by The Aldingbourne Trust, WorkAid aims to match adults with learning disabilities with suitable work placements and includes help for employers to get the most from their valuable and productive new employee.

Candidates work through a tailored programme to prepare them for the world of work including skills training, assistance with job applications and supported inductions with employers.

The WorkAid programme empowers individuals by raising their self-confidence, independence and self-esteem while challenging perceptions of disability in the workplace.
" It's rewarding to assist people with learning disabilities achieve their goals in the workplace," says Caroline.

She has been involved with Crawley RFC's Sunday Social Club since it began. Caroline commends Mark Rodwell and Crawley RFC for wanting to provide an environment where people with learning disabilities can make friends, develop social skills, relax and be themselves:
"I really enjoy attending. It's such a great atmosphere. I always leave the Sunday Social with a smile on my face."

Caroline describes Crawley RFC as pioneers, the Sunday Social Club a model of something that could be duplicated by other sports clubs across the South East.
"I really like the emphasis that Crawley RFC have on family, on community and on pulling together to support each other. It is great to see the rugby players coming along to the Sunday Social too. It bridges the gap and helps the Sunday Social Club members feel accepted. It's such a great step forward."
