Crawley minis find success at Chichester

CRAWLEY'S youth rugby teams enjoyed festival success over the weekend with the U7s, U8s and U9s attending Chichester's while the U10s, U11s and U12s went to Pulborough.

Crawley U7s A Red had a fantastic day with three wins and one draw in the first round, which brought them into third-place play-off against Chichester B, which Crawley A won 9-6.

Jack Haines scored an impressive 12 tries for the day, closely followed by Max Wolthers with 11 tries and Logan McKenzie with eight.

Crawley B Blue lost three and drew one in the first round to earn a fifth-place play-off against Worthing A, whom they beat 9-6 to take the fifth-place trophy.

Daniel Miller scored an amazing 21 tries, Leo Jackson six, Alfie Bagshaw five and Ellis Hankin four.

Crawley U8s, captained by Holly Jackson, came fourth overall and also won the fair play award in their category.

After drawing 4-4 with Bognor, the U8s beat Pulborough 5-4 before losing to Chichester.

Crawley drew a thrilling game 3-3 with Worthing, but missed out on a top-three place on try difference.

In the U8s' last deciding game, they were again drawn against Pulborough and this time won 5-2. Bailey Lunn was the player of the tournament for the U8s.

Crawley U9s started the day with a gutsy performance against Chichester but sadly lost 3-1; however, they beat Pulborough 5-4 with a late try before losing by the same scoreline to Worthing. Crawley finished third in the pool and to set up a final with Pulborough A, which they lost 7-2.

Crawley U10s won the Regional Vase Trophy at Pulborough's West Sussex festival.

The first two games were tough going – in particular against an organised Chichester team in the first – but Crawley rallied and turned up the intensity against Bognor and Worthing with experienced players Josh Robins and Tiarnan Currie leading the way, ably assisted by newer players Cerys Pegley and William Foss.

Crawley U11s were slow out of the blocks at Pulborough and suffered defeats by Chichester and the hosts, who went on to win at the U11 age group.

The Crawley boys kept their heads high and played some great rugby but struggled to break the opposition defensive lines. The team did not get the results they wanted but came away with a third-place trophy after sticking with the team's plan and playing their best. New team member Nicholas Danby was a standout performer.
