Steve Wheeler

Raymond John Sutherland

Sad News!!

To all friends of Crawley RFC.

It is with great sadness I have to inform you that Steve Wheeler passed away earlier today (Sunday 6th Oct) aged 75.

Steve played prop for the Club throughout the 70’s and was a stalwart club member, there when you needed him, playing regularly, consuming a lot of beer, and holding various committee roles before being Chairman for two years 1981 to 1983. When he stepped down from the committee and playing in the 80’s, he continued his involvement in the club, helping out where he could in a variety of tasks, including catering for the club’s New Year’s Eve party where he produced an excellent Indian buffet served with a “mood altering” vinaigrette, that definitely got the party going. He would also fill in if a referee was required on a Saturday, and for the then “new” ladies team on Sunday afternoons, for whom he would regularly give his time to support and officiate their home matches. Although Steves’ involvement with the club dwindled in recent years, he always followed the club’s progress and would attend the occasional VP lunch, his last in 2025.

Steve was a generous, gentle man, that left me and I’m sure many others that knew him, many happy, funny memories. May he rest in peace.

I will circulate funeral details as soon as I know them.

Kind regards

Paul Chapman
