Not only did they uphold the honor of Fortress Willoughby by lifting the Tournament Bronze Trophy but at last they have beaten Hove and the Monkey is now well and truly off their backs.
Having been drawn in the first round games against Hove, Worthing and Chichester in the strongest group, at last the whole squad stepped up for the challenge. Hove first, (our bogey team), and after a cagey start by both sides in the first half Crawley opened the scoring early in the first half with a flying Jack Ingham try from 40 metres out. Hove drew even straight from the re-start and a draw looked likely. Then with less than 90 seconds left Crawley battered down the middle with a series of overlapping moves led by Sebastian Brogan, supported by all, who crossed the line to the ecstatic delight of all our faithful supporters. The whistle blew and at last the boys had a scalp to be proud of! Sadly this was followed by disappointing defeats to Worthing and Chichester but their reward was a Bronze league final against Burgess Hill and Eastbourne.
Burgess Hill first, who fielded a very big strong side, including 4 Under 10’s, and the Crawley boys took a battering but stood firm finally winning 20 – 10 and the medals were in sight. Only the final game against Eastbourne to go and it was worth waiting for. Both sides can be proud of their displays in what for many was the best rugby by both sides seen on the day! In an end to end game it was standing a 10 – 10 in the second half, when cheered on by the faithful fans (we believe Mr. Duggan could be heard from the clubhouse!) a superb breakthrough by new signing Lochie Yarlett saw him outpace the despairing Eastbourne defence for a brilliant solo effort. Then, just a minute later, our other flying winger Jack Ingham broke through on the other side to repeat another fantastic score for the home side! The whistle blew and the team and fans erupted in pure joy and pride! This was it! Back to the clubhouse for tea and medals!
A massive thank you to Carolyn and her team of parents and helpers who made all this possible on a fantastic day for the Club. I’m just sorry many of you missed that game, but Craig, myself and all the boys are promise to give you many more in the future!
